Today's challenge comes from JavaScript30.
🌈 Yesterday I took a break from doing a JS challenge (I still studied a bit and wrapped my first module in Advanced CSS) so that I could participate in my friends’ wedding! They are teammates of mine in Charlotte Roller Derby and one of them is my personal trainer. I felt honored to be a part of their day!
Now back to some heads down coding!
JavaScript30 - Day 21
For this challenge I needed to download Xcode. I had to clear up space on my computer to fit it. I am really beginning to feel like I need to a new device to go much further. This computer is feeling sluggish and I’m often running out of room.
I should probably just start deleting projects after I push them up to GitHub to clear up some space. Especially projects I’ll never touch again.
Xcode ended up taking over 4 hours to download and install. So hopefully I can get moving now!
OK. I’m still struggling… because now I need an iOS simulator. These are the times I wish I had someone on tap to help me through the process.
Figured it out. Open Xcode, click the menu, Open Developer Tools, then select Simulator. It’s booting up for me now…
Very cool!! It’s moments like this that I’m like… OK. I really am getting somewhere. I can do cool things and I really do know something.
We need to spin up a server for this project.
npm install
npm start
Now we have the IP address to open up our project on the simulator.
My computer is throwing an absolute fit over this. This is the first time I’ve ever heard the fan going off like this, but it’s working for now so I’d really like to try and complete this challenge!
To begin we need to select the arrow and the km/h.

Next we need to listen for the users position.

We are asking it to watch our data’s location. navigator, geolocation, watchPosition are all innate properties in javascript.
It’s going to ask us to use our location.
Now we can see the GeolocationPosition
in the console log.
My settings for the browser seem to be a person standing still. Hopefully on the app they can be perceived to be moving around thru the simulation.
Time to add it to the UI.

We took the speed
data point from our console log and added it to our textContent
.
Now to update the arrow!
arrow.style.transform = `rotate(20deg)`;
This will rotate the arrow by 20 degrees.
But we want it to update based off of the data. Not some hard coded degree.

This will be based off of how many degrees from north.

Once we got up and running that challenge didn’t take too long, but the fact that I had never done anything with Xcode or iOS simulator made this really arduous!
